Solid wood furniture is still favored by consumers for its unique warm and natural texture. However, due to the lack of wood resources, large-format furniture components are mostly made of narrow solid wood material glue splicing.

 

The following problems will occur in the previous solid wood panel furniture manufacturing:

 

  1. Due to the internal stress of the wood and other reasons, the solid wood narrow board will have quality problems such as surface warpage and deformation, cracking of the glue layer, peeling off and breaking of fingers and tenon;

 

  1. Due to the glue problem, there will be certain problems with the furniture’s environmental protection.

 

In view of the above problems to solve the environmental protection problem, glue-free splicing can be selected. Through the joint of tenon and each wood unit interacts to make the splicing reach a stable status.

 

In order to improve the splicing, it is necessary to understand the current situation of the splicing structure. The combination form of the splicing puzzle is an important factor which affects the quality. Commonly used splicing puzzles are flat, inclined, cut, concave and convex, and toothed.

 

1、Flat Joining

Flat joining is a splicing method in which two solid wood narrow boards with flat and direct surfaces are tightly and seamlessly connected by using glue.

2、Inclined Joining

Due to the increase of the gluing area in the inclined splicing, the strength of the splicing board is slightly higher than that of the flat joining. However, the surface of the splicing board is prone to unevenness due to the difficulty of the joint surface during gluing.

3、Cut Joining

The joint area of the cut joining is large which has good joint strength and is easy to align.

4、Concave and Convex Joining

The concave and convex structure of the splicing can cover the cracked glue join. The larger cutting joint area is, the splicing strength will be higher.

5、Toothed Joining

The area of toothed joining is quite large and has good joining strength. The joining surface is flat, but the processing is complex.

 

In the current splicing structure mentioned above, the actual production is mainly flat joining, but the use of glue has an impact on the strength of the splicing. As a kind of joint tenon structure, the splicing of large panel not only reduces the use of glue, but also increases the stability between boards.

The traditional board structure is further improved. The key part of the improvement is the junction of the two boards. It is composed of multiple groups of modified dovetail tenons that are inclined 45° along the fiber direction and arranged in a tooth-like manner. The interval has been adjusted to make it a complementary relationship. In addition, to ensure the flatness of the side of the board, the edge of the board adopts an improved half dovetail tenon and an improved half dovetail groove, which form a complementary relationship. 

In the actual splicing process, the tenon and the groove need to be aligned to ensure that the tenon of the modified half dovetail corresponds to the groove during the splicing process. Afterwards, evenly apply a force of 45° to the horizontal board to the entire board, so that the board is displaced to improve the dovetail matching and the splicing is completed.

The improved board structure makes full use of the advantages of the dovetail tenon to obtain higher joint strength. The new dovetail tenon structure enables the board to be displaced after the splicing is completed, except when the plates are subjected to a uniform force of 45° along the fiber direction and the horizontal board. It can be clamped when they are subjected to forces in other directions to achieve tight connection.

In addition to structural breakthroughs, solid wood joining must also have technological innovations. Establishing a complete production line is one of the quick ways for enterprises to adapt to current technological development and increase productivity. The complete high-frequency automatic splicing production line includes automatic feeding, automatic gluing, automatic discharging, high-frequency splicing, automatic palletizing, etc.

The entire production line only needs one person to operate, which not only reduces labor intensity, but also greatly saves labor. The automatic gluing system saves more than 25%-30% than manual gluing and streamlined operation greatly improves productivity.
